Chief Jerry Hughes (Chicago Fire Department Ret.)
A 35 year veteran firefighter, Chief Hughes took a path less traveled in the fire service. Instead of following the crowd, he pursued his passion for fire prevention. Foregoing the glory of fighting one preventable fire after the next, he recognized that his city was in trouble and chose to defend it through proactive fire inspections and building code enforcement. His efforts led to a self certification program that ensured annual inspections of fire sprinkler systems were done on a timely basis. The cost recovery recieved for non-payment of past due permit fees coupled with fewer fires in fire sprinklered occupancies preserved commercial tax revnues in the tens of millions of dollars.
